Grand Cayman on a Cruise
Clear water, stingrays and a tender ride to George Town.

Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, is a polished, easy-going port with famously clear water. Ships anchor off George Town, the capital, and ferry guests ashore by tender to the downtown waterfront.
Because the island has no cruise pier, the day starts and ends with a short boat ride. On busy days with several ships at anchor, tender tickets and lines can slow you down, and in rough weather a call is sometimes cancelled or moved to the other side of the island. Leave buffer time for the return, especially if you are touring independently.
The Classic Cayman Day

Stingray City
Boats take guests out to a shallow sandbar in North Sound where southern stingrays gather around visitors standing in the water.

Seven Mile Beach
A long, calm stretch of sand just north of George Town, lined with resorts and beach bars.

Diving and snorkeling
Wall dives drop off close to shore, and snorkel spots such as shipwrecks and shallow reefs are reachable by boat or from the beach.
Beyond the Beach
Other popular stops include the Cayman Turtle Centre, the Crystal Caves, the village of Hell with its black limestone formations, and Rum Point on the north side, a quiet beach reached by road or boat. George Town itself has duty-free jewelry shops and restaurants along the harbor.
Driving is on the left. Taxis use posted rates, and minibuses serve the main roads. See Grand Cayman shore excursions for tours with live prices.
Where it fits: Grand Cayman appears mostly on seven-night weeks from South Florida and Tampa, paired with Jamaica and Cozumel. Texas and Louisiana sailings visit it less often, because Central American ports are closer.
Grand Cayman Questions
Why does Grand Cayman use tenders?
George Town has no cruise berths for large ships, so they anchor offshore and tender guests to the waterfront. Plans for a cruise pier have been debated for years without being built.
Is Stingray City safe?
The sandbar trips are run by licensed operators, and guides show you how to stand and handle the rays. Follow their instructions and shuffle your feet in the sand.
What currency is used?
The Cayman Islands dollar, though U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere visitors go. Change is often given in Cayman dollars.
A Sample Plan for a Tender Day
- Get an early tender ticket if you are touring on your own; guests on ship tours often go ashore first.
- Do Stingray City in the morning, when the sandbar is less crowded and the light on the water is at its best.
- Spend the afternoon on Seven Mile Beach, a short taxi ride from the tender landing.
- Head back to the landing an hour before the last tender, and keep the ship’s port agent details with you.
