Mayan history and coral reefs are the twin draws of a Western Caribbean cruise. This page helps you match the right excursion to the right port, so you spend your time ashore on the experiences that matter most to you.
| Port | Mayan site | Reef and water |
|---|---|---|
| Cozumel | Tulum on the mainland (ferry plus drive); small San Gervasio site on the island | Palancar and other marine-park reefs, beach-club snorkeling |
| Costa Maya | Chacchoben, about an hour inland | Reef just offshore, kayaking, lagoons |
| Belize City | Altun Ha; Lamanai on a longer trip | Belize Barrier Reef and cayes, cave tubing on inland rivers |
| Roatán | — | Shore snorkeling at West Bay, dive boats, glass-bottom boats |
| Grand Cayman | — | Stingray City, wall dives, shipwreck snorkeling |
Planning a Ruins Day

Mayan sites are hot and exposed, and most of the good ones are an hour or more from the pier. Go early if your ship’s schedule allows, wear a hat and closed shoes, and bring water. A licensed guide makes the stones come alive: the calendar, the trade routes and the reasons these cities rose and fell.
Tulum is the most photographed site thanks to its seaside setting; Chacchoben and Altun Ha are quieter and set in forest. Climbing rules vary by site and change over time, so do not plan around climbing a particular pyramid.
Planning a Reef Day
The Mesoamerican Reef offers some of the clearest water in the Caribbean. Snorkel boats usually visit two sites, and many include equipment and a guide in the water. In Cozumel, drift snorkeling and diving let the current carry you along the reef. Protect the reef by not touching or standing on coral, and choose a mineral, reef-safe sunscreen.

Ruins and Reef Questions
Which Mayan ruins can I reach on a Western Caribbean cruise?
Tulum and other Riviera Maya sites from Cozumel (via the ferry to Playa del Carmen), Chacchoben from Costa Maya, and Altun Ha or the longer trip to Lamanai from Belize City. Chichén Itzá is usually visited from Progreso, covered on Mexico Cruising.
Do I need to be a certified diver?
Snorkeling needs no certification. For scuba, many operators offer introductory “discover” dives with an instructor; certified divers should bring their certification card and logbook.
Are ship tours better than booking on my own?
For long trips to ruins or remote reefs, a ship tour or a reputable operator that guarantees your return is the safer choice. For a beach day near the pier, going independently works well.
